چکیده

The most meaningful parameter to determine the treatment efficiency of large scale sedimentation tanks is the settling velocity of suspended solids. However it is difficult to measured representative settling velocity because of the instability of suspended solids. A water elutriation system was tested to assess the treatment efficiency of sedimentation tanks. In laboratory tests the flow conditions in the water elutriation system were investigated which are important for the separation process of different settleable particles. Furthermore particle tracer tests were carried out in the water elutriation system to examine the separation efficiency of the system. An investigation made on the performance of sedimentation tanks proves the applicability of the system under real operation conditions. The field investigations indicate that high over-all efficiency must not be the result of a well constructed and working tank if it results on a great amount of well settleable particles in the inflow. Furthermore real time particle size distributions of suspended particles were carried out with a submersible field instrument developed for in-situ observation. These results confirm the function of the water elutriation system measurement which was carried out parallel.

Field Measurement of Particle Settling Velocity

Many stormwater management practices depend on sedimentation as their primary removal mechanism, but the settling velocity distribution of particles in runoff from a specific watershed is rarely known. A simple and effective method to characterize settling velocity distribution is needed to improve the design of stormwater management practices. Elutriation devices have been used to characterize...

Pii: S0025-3227(00)00044-x

In this paper we describe two sensors for measurement of particle size-distribution and settling-velocity distribution. These measurements are critical to the correct estimation of the true sediment concentration in the ®eld, as well as to evaluating models for transport rates of sediments. A multi-angle measurement of laser scattering is made and inverted to obtain the particle size distributi...

A numerical study of the dynamics of a particle settling at moderate Reynolds numbers in a linearly stratified fluid

In this paper, the transient settling dynamics of a spherical particle sedimenting in a linearly stratified fluid is investigated by performing fully resolved direct numerical simulations. The settling behaviour is quantified for different values of Reynolds, Froude and Prandtl numbers. It is demonstrated that the transient settling dynamics is correlated to the induced Lagrangian drift of flow...

Dry Deposition of Particulate Matter Emitted from Cotton Gins - Particle Size Distribution of the Particulate Matter in the Downwind Plume

An engineering approach to analyze PM dry deposition due to gravitational settling is summarized in this paper. Particle horizontal settling distance is determined based upon wind speed and particle terminal settling velocity. New PSD in the downwind plume is calculated based upon particle horizontal settling distance and source PSD. Results of this research indicate that change of PSD in the d...

A New Approach for Obtaining Settling Velocity in a Thickener Using Statistical Regression: A Case Study

In this research work, the parameters affecting the settling velocity within the thickeners were studied by introducing an equivalent shape factor. Several thickener feed samples of different densities including copper, lead and zinc, and coal were prepared. The settling tests were performed on the samples, and the corresponding settling curves were plotted. Using the linear regression analysis...
